ABOUT
In Turner Cody's songs one can hear the tradition of American songwriting and poetry going back to Stephen Foster and Edgar Allen Poe. Cody is a wordsmith and an old soul with a love of Civil War ballads and pre-war Jazz standards as well as the songs of Jimmy Rodgers, Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Billy Joe Shaver, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, and David Berman.
He arrived at the Sidewalk Cafe in New York City in the fall of 1999 and cut his songwriting teeth alongside other members of the Anti-Folk scene including Adam Green and Jeffrey Lewis.
The East Village of the late 90s and early 2000s provided the perfect bohemian setting for Cody and his fellow antifolkers to develop their song craft from Tomkins Square Park to the all-night diners along Avenue A. In the early days of the Sidewalk Cafe, Cody made the low-fi home-recorded albums Turner Cody, This Springtime and Others, and Who Went West.
Then in 2002 a chance encounter with the French folk-rock trio Herman Dune resulted in many European tours and musical collaborations that included the albums The Cody Choir, The Great Migration, and Quarter Century. Cody’s haunts were nolonger the bars of the East Village but the cafes of Paris and the beer halls of Berlin.
In 2008, Cody’s first 7 records were released as the compilation 60 Seasons by b.y_records.
His song “Corner Of My Room” appeared in the Oscar nominated film Un Prophet directed by Jacques Audiard.
Over the next decade, Cody recorded First Light, Gangbusters, The Rules Of The Road, Last Of The Big Time Spenders, Plans And Schemes, Hiding In Plain Sight and The Duke Of Decline.
For most of his 30s Cody worked as a pizza delivery man in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Songs Of Turner Cody: A Tribute Album featuring Adam Green, Jeffrey Lewis, Herman Dune, Diane Cluck, Timesbold, and many others was released in 2019.
In 2020, Turner Cody joined the Belgian music label Capitane Records. Along with the Capitane house band The Soldiers of Love, Cody recorded Friends in High Places, produced by the Belgian singer-songwriter Nicolas Michaux.
In 2022 and 2026, Cody and The Soldiers of Love joined Adam Green on his headlining tours throughout Europe. In 2023, Cody and Capitane collaborated alongside Green on Moping in Style: A Tribute to Adam Green which featured Regina Spektor, Father John Misty, Devendra Banhart, The Libertines, Joanna Sternberg, Jenny Lewis, The Lemonheads and many more.
In 2026 Capitane released Out For Blood, also with The Soldiers of Love. Out For Blood is a further meditation on lyrical themes that have persisted throughout Cody's career: love and loss, sin and redemption, age and youth, and the unrecoverable past.
Cody is a songwriter in the Amercian tradition. He currently lives in Normal Illinois with his wife and son.
